Tucson, Arizona The Jim Howell Band releases a sophomore effort, La Cienega, on Friday March 31 and will celebrate with a release party at La Cocina that night. The new EP, La Cienega, from The Jim Howell Band is an electric six-pack of tunes exploring the duality of human life; hope against depression, light versus evil, achievement and lowered expectations. Bandleader and songwriter Jim Howell delivers vocals, guitars, piano, harmonica and percussion on the tracks. Joining Jim on this recording are recurring band mates Loren Dircks (guitars), Michael Santander (bass), Sean McCann (drums), Michael P. Nordberg (keys/electric piano/organ) and newcomer to the outfit, Jeremy Michael Cashman (lap steel).
Jim captured the band live in the studio for the basic tracks in a four-hour session in late July, 2016. He then added some additional parts and final vocals to quickly wrap up the recording in his own studio doing the double duty of performer and engineer/producer. This “mostly live” method lent a cohesive sound to the EP meshing appropriately with the songs consistent songwriting. The recording procedure and song crafting on La Cienega were both quick and decisive compared to Silver Clouds, the band’s debut. The previous album contained songs that had been worked upon for some time but also had a painstaking recording process where Jim played many of the instruments himself, overdubbing them individually.
March 31st marks the release date for La Cienega on iTunes, Amazon, Bandcamp and other online retailers and streaming services. Physical CDs will be available at the release show scheduled at La Cocina that night. The CDs will then be available online thereafter. Presale downloads and samples are already available on the band’s Bandcamp site. (www.thejimhowellband.bandcamp.com)
The release show at La Cocina will be part of an ongoing Friday night series there entitled “The Country Club” which is hosted by another multi-instrumentalist songwriter, Freddy Parish. The show will feature a full band electric set from The Jim Howell Band on the outside garden patio stage. Things will move indoors for a set from Freddy Parish to close out the night.
